North Iowa Area Community College’s Developmental Reading Team has been implementing the Hawkes Foundations of English curriculum into its Power Reading class throughout the fall semester of 2015. In this webinar, Michael will discuss the following:
- Course implementation/setup
- Student and staff opinions of the program
- Methods developmental students can utilize to incorporate the Hawkes strategies into other classes.
About the Presenter:
I am Michael Thompson, currently serving as a Developmental Reading & Writing Instructor and Interim Developmental Reading & Writing Coordinator at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), located in Mason City, Iowa. I was born in raised in Osage, Iowa, and graduated from Osage High School in 1997. After high school graduation, I studied elementary education at NIACC, graduating with an AA in 1999. I pursued further studies at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, graduating in 2001 with a BA in the Fine Arts and a K-8 teaching certificate. I graduated from Morningside College (Sioux City, IA) in 2010 with a MA in education. Prior to working at NIACC, I have served as a special education teacher of children with severe emotional, mental, and behavioral needs for both the Area Education Agency 267 (Cedar Falls, Iowa) as well as the Mason City Community School District (Mason City, Iowa).
