A Flipped Classroom in Developmental Mathematics

Join us to learn how Ms. Silke Hunker at Northeastern Junior College (NJC) created a flipped classroom for her developmental math classes. Silke will share the course structure of both MAT050 – Quantitative Literacy and MAT055 – Algebraic Literacy, including the resources she provides students to make the flipped classroom approach work. She will explain how she has incorporated Hawkes Learning’s Developmental Mathematics online courseware into the design after piloting the materials in spring 2015. Silke will share students’ reactions to the flipped classroom model, challenges she has faced, and test score data.


About the Presenter:

Ms. Silke Hunker was born in Germany and moved to the United States to study and play college basketball. Before taking her position as lead developmental math instructor at Northeastern Junior College (NJC) in January 2014, Silke taught junior and senior high school math, as well as middle school science. She oversees the developmental math department at NJC, which includes developmental education courses and support courses.
